When we look at plus-size fashion today, the picture is complicated. On one hand, the business side is thriving. On the other, cultural representation feels like it’s shrinking right before our eyes.

Fewer Plus-Size Models on the Runway

Let’s start with the hard truth: opportunities for plus-size models in fashion are disappearing at an alarming rate.

Back in the spring/summer 2020 season, 86 plus-size models walked the runways across the four major fashion cities. That accounted for just 2.8% of all models. By spring/summer 2025? That number had plummeted.

For those of us who live in plus-size bodies, that’s not just disappointing—it’s disheartening. The runways still don’t reflect the reality of who is buying clothes.

Why the Market Keeps Growing

Now, here’s the flip side: the commercial growth of plus-size fashion is undeniable. By 2035, over half of the global population—nearly 4 billion people—will be living in larger bodies. The fashion industry knows this, and strategies are evolving.

The plus-size fashion business in 2025 is:

  • Financially strong – sales are climbing year over year.

  • Globally expanding – new markets are opening up.

  • Technologically innovative – virtual try-ons, better fit algorithms, and improved e-commerce tools are changing how we shop.

In other words, brands investing in this space aren’t taking risks—they’re making smart, prescient moves.

Two Realities, One Industry

Here’s what fascinates me: we’re seeing two truths at the same time.

  • Culturally, we’re still pushing against outdated beauty standards.

  • Commercially, we are one of fashion’s most dynamic, underserved, and lucrative markets.

It’s a reminder that our visibility in the media and on the runway may waver, but our buying power and cultural influence aren’t going anywhere.
